Ripstop vs. Twill - What's the Difference February 16, 2009
"Now owning both types, Here are my observations:

Both TDU's are made of the exact material but have very different characterisics.

Twill:
Softer
Warmer
Quieter when walking
Longer dry time
Rips easier
Less color selection

Ripstop:
Stiffer
Cooler
Noiser when walking
Dries quicker
More rip resistent
Greater color selection

Hope this helps.

TDU Twill Pants August 27, 2008
"This were the first 5.11 Tactical product that I purchased.

I do competetive action shooting. The built in, yet removeable, knee pads were the main reason for going to a tactical pant for this sport. There were many extra features that I didn't realize until I actually started "using" the TDU's.

The TDU with the elastic tuxedo waist always stay in place, very nice feature when wearing a heavy gun belt. The side cargo pockets work very well for (4) AR-15 magazines without falling sideways in the pocket! Mobility and flexibility yet contouring as well, something you have to experience for yourself.

5.11 Tactical TDU's far outweight the old military fatigues by a mile.

Thanks for the introduction into the 5.11 Tactical world.

"I have always purchased the ripstop nylon 5.11 tactical pants. I have found however in the South Texas heat, they do get a little warm especially in the midnight blue of our uniform. This time I opted for the TDU Twill and found them to be a great option. They maintain all the features of the ripstop material but are noticiably cooler and even it seems, a little roomier. Regardless of which style one chooses, neither one can be beat, they are top quality uniform equipment that funtion perfectly for the purpose intended. I find myself cycling out my older ones and turning them into weekend around the house chore pants. Very comfortable; and all those pockets, screwdriver, knife, bab-b-que lighter, sweat rag, pliers, etc. etc. etc. Thanks 5.11"

Comfortable... May 11, 2009
"I got these for off duty wear just so I could have a good pair of cargo pants... They are possibly the most comfortable and functional pants I have ever worn. They are more useful then the ABUs or BDUs I wear at work and they just fit better.

My one problem with them is that the elastic snapped on the left side the 2nd day I had them. I superglued it back on and it worked. It looked like it wasn't sewed in very well on the pant. Probably a machining flaw. I will be buying more.

Well made pants September 23, 2008
"Good fit. 5.11 seems to also offer the widest range of sizes, something I can't always say for other companies offering comparable products. So far, the pants have held up well and is very comfortable in a wide range of weather."

Best pants for Corrections September 9, 2008
"The first day i wore these pants we had an incident that i responded to were we had to take someone down to the ground, the kneepads came were great.
On comfort they are the most comfortable and have plenty of pockets for timebooks, etc.
Re: the fit, i wear a 38 waist, which should be a Large size according to your chart. I had to re-order in an XL size. Also, the knee pads should have a zipper opening or something larger to fit the knee pads through.
Besides that, i have been recommending these pants to co-workers when they ask where i got them from.

Size Does Matter September 9, 2008
"The TDU Pants are an excellent value and you've made them in a size that fits me. That's a bit of a challenge with my 36" inseam / sleve length. THe right number of pockets and hook ups complement this durable tactical pant. You should however change the insert slot for the kneepads from the bottom to the side, as in other tactical pants. After a short period of wear, the pads tend to creep down and become malpositioned."

These have replaced my station pants August 28, 2008
"These pants have allowed great versatility working at a fire department with a busy run volume. The flexible waistband allows a lot of different movements without pinching, and the kneepads are nice for search and rescue work or prolonged EMS training. The cargo pockets do a great job of keeping pens/knives/etc organized and secure. I just wish these came in shorts."

Nice Pants, but does not slide well. August 27, 2008
"I got these pants and the Ripstop version for my range days. Which were two weeks in the sun in 80-90 degree weather. I also wore these pants for or POST training.

The Good:

Lots of pockets and the adjustable waist band elastic for "flexibility". This allows the pants to "stretch" at the waist as you maneuver around in crouched positions.

The built in knee pads were adequate in padding your kneecap from kneeing on a hard object.

The fabric has a good dye job, I washed those pants every day, and after 30+ straight washes, they faded very little, unlike some of the cheaper BDU pants my fellow officers wore, which noticeably faded after 15 washes.

The fabric is also abrasion resistant, no noticeable wear at the most common abrasion points yet.

The Bad:

These pants are hot, I do not know what they treated the fabric with, but they are restrictive in letting your legs breath. My legs have never sweated so much with other BDU/TDU type pants. Removing the neoprene kneepads actually helped my legs stay cooler. That is surprising because they are not heavy pieces, they are only 1/4 inch thick and are approximately 8x6" in dimension and are only around my knees.

The dye job is also "very" dark for the rated color shown on the website. I ordered two pairs of the Navy and when I got it, I thought they were black. In indoor lighting, they look black, only when outside under direct sun could I tell it was Navy. I have put one pair through about 50+ washings and now one can tell its "Navy Blue" under indoor lighting.

The Ugly:

The neoprene is lightweight. I ripped one set the first time pulling it out of my pants for washing. Trick is you have to fold it to get it out of the access hole. If you do not, one of the edges can catch and the pad tears easily.

Also with the fabric protector they put on the pants, it does not slide very well. Taking a quick knee results in your pant waists going down versus your cuff leg going up. It is annoying and restrictive in that motion of movement. In addition, when your legs are sweaty...sometimes you do not always get down to a low crouch. The range instructor said on a couple of occasions that you folks wearing the 511's might want to hike up your pant legs up before this exercise begins.

Overall, these are very full featured pants for Police use. The negative aspects with the darkness of the dye job and the inability of the pants to allow air movement and the ability to slide up and down your leg will go away hopefully with time.

Good pair of tactical pants August 27, 2008
"Good pair of tactical pants. Pocket placement and special features were well thought of. Not quite as comfortable as the original 5.11 pants but not as bad as other non 5.11 tactical pants."
