Ripstop vs. Twill... What's the difference?
|
February 16, 2009
|
"Now owning both types, Here are my observations:
Both TDU's are made of the exact material but have very different characterisics.
Twill: Softer Warmer Quieter when walking Longer dry time Rips easier Less color selection
Ripstop: Stiffer Cooler Noiser when walking Dries quicker More rip resistent Greater color selection
Hope this helps."

fit/quality not consistant
|
September 10, 2009

"I have 9 pairs of poly/cotton ripstop TDU pants which I wear daily. 1 pair is 3 years old the rest are a year old. I bought 8 more because i was happy with the 1st pair, i was very disappointed when i got the additional which were nowhere like the quality of the 1st, increased demand has drastically affected 5.11 quality
fit is different depending on the color which are manufactured in different countries. I wear a waist 32 so need mediums. 3 pairs of navy and 2 black fit not bad, but the 2 khakis and ODs are borderline too tight in the waist which are suppose to fit up to a 35 in waste. Someone with a 34 inch waist would have to go to the next size up. I have not noticed any shrink in the wash, which i was hoping for..
quality control is obviously not a priority. Of the 9 pairs none of the thigh pockets, reinforced knees are at the same location, all 9 pants are different lengths even though they are all suppose to be short legged. 2 navy pants a different waist elastic was used after about 2 wash it was no longer an elastic. other little quirks are found. Colour shade is never the same new and fade rather quickly even when claims are they will not. My TDU shirts are not the same shade as the pants, 2 navy shirts have very different colour shade from one another.
I have 6 BDU pants from another large manufacturer and all pants are identical.
I think these pants would be perfect if they were fabricated by waist sizing or even on the tactical pant frame with the TDU pockets.
I like the features and style of TDUs but I will likely go elsewhere for replacements."

"Today is the first time I have worn them to the FD. I found them a little warm under turn out gear, ( but is was 90 ). Very comfortable fit, and I think the deep pockets are great. I am going to order a pair of tac lites for the warmer days though. I would reccomend these trousers to anybody who is a little to rough on their clothes."

"Cons They fade very quickly. I have had mine in black for about 3 months now and the upper leg and hips have faded to a brownish color. This is quite irritating. The only "rip" they have suffered is a 1/4 inch abrasion on the knee when that knee took the full force of a fall on rough concrete. Oh well, not noticeable.
Pros Perfect fit. I got the 36" Long and am very happy with them. My old pants had to be ordered with a larger waist to get the proper length and these are much better. I also like the reinforced lip on the front pocket for knife clips. I wear Cinch jeans which are some of the most durable jeans I have ever owned and they still wear where the knife sits. The material overall is very sturdy. My wallet has a metal money clip on it which when in my pocket faces away from me. All of my jeans have developed a small hole from rubbing against the money clip when I sit. These pants however have not shown the slightest in wear from falling on my butt during fights. Amazing.
Changes I have a Quiksilver snow jacket that has magnetic closures on the cargo pockets. They are very secure and very quiet. In the 8 years I have had that jacket that magnets have shown no sign of demagnetizing nor have they ever interfered with any electronic device I may carry. That would be a great feature to see on these pants. I would also like to see a rubberized shirt keeper built into them but that is not too important. One of my biggest gripes about these pants is the design of the belt loops. I like how large they are, but I would exchange the size for quantity so I can more evenly space my duty belt keepers."

Black TDU Ripstop Pants
|
July 30, 2009
|
"Excellent pants.
But the are missing some important pockets.
They don't have the back sap/billy club/flashlight pockets.
These long pockets are important. I use them to place a large flashlight in them and to place foldger keys int hem as well. I would slide the flashlight in belt ring then slide the base of the flashlight into the long back pocket. This would reduce noise and movement of the flashlight when walking and running. Same with the foldger keys.
Please add more pockets to the TDU Ripstop pants.
Outside of that they are great, alot better than what the department recommends and issues."

5.11 TDU ripstock, pants and shirts fade
|
May 24, 2009
|
"Love the pants and shirts for fit and comfort. Never ripped a pair yet. I wear the black color and the only problem is they fade quickly when worn everyday. This has been an issue since I began wearing them 3 years ago. No answer on how to avoid the fade."

5.11 Ripstop TDU
|
May 13, 2009
|
"Our team recently switched over to the 5.11 Ripstop TDU. Although we like the pants, we found that sizing was an issue. For whatever reason they seem to run at least a size smaller than the cotton version TDU which caused some problems. They also seem to be shorter from the belt line to the inseam. Having said that, we do love the 5.11 products."

Rip Stop Pants
|
May 4, 2009
|
"I loved the class A pants & our agency just switched to these. Nice to have extra pockets, but these TDUs are very stiff! The room in the thigh area needs to be increased. I am a size 36 waist, yet the size large pants expanded so that you can see the inside of the top pockets due to the waist expanding too far. The zipper is rough and the zipper pull is too small. There is nothing on the inside of the waist band to prevent the back of the matching shirt (see review) from becoming untucked and covering your duty belt.
Nice idea, but they need some work."

Whoa, tight.
|
April 2, 2009
|
"Okay, so I've been wearing 511 tac pants for years now and I've always worn 40/34 or 42/34 for a really loose fit. So I ordered the XL's which are supposed to go from 39-43. When I tried them on, sure they FIT, but they were extremely TIGHT! They were tightest around my thighs and calves. In fact, they were so tight around my calves that I couldn't really pull them up. (I'm 6'2 and weigh 135kg/270lbs). Just a heads up. I'm going to exchange these for an XXL, but other than that, they're great."

"I recently purchased 3 pair of the ripstop pants in XXL Reg. I love the pants and the stretch waistband, HOWEVER! the legs are too slim! I am 5'10" and 250 lbs. with 29" thighs. Had I known how slim these pants were I would have ordered the 3xls for a better thigh fit. I would appreciate a cut more along the lines of the old 'Nam jungle OD's with a wider leg that allowed better range of motion. Other than that I love them and enjoy wearing them."

The Best

"I have been very happy with the TDU uniform. My department approved this pant for patrol use. It's been my favorite brand of duty pants. I purchased the holster that attaches to the inside cargo pocket and carry my back-up 38 in the holster. Very well designed."
