"I was working for a marina years ago doing some relief work for security. The marina supplied me with your shorts and I have since given up the security gig but have continued to wear the academy shorts for both pleasure and work. I have yet to find a better pair of shorts anywhere in the market place. I highly recommend these shorts"

Excellent short would be even better in nylon

"The shorter inseam and more functional cargo pockets make this much more flexible for actual op wear than the tactical shorts.
And as noted above, this short would be even better were it available in a quick drying nylon version facilitating its multi-function and crossover use for SAR, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, beach, swimming, and any activity where one needs rugged potentially amphibious usage - a market niche which suffers from a significant dearth of truly functional designs!
Cotton, while trendy, simply does not wear nor dry like the nylon alternative.
Do the right thing, combine the desirable shorter inseam and cargo design with the more functional and versatile nylon material."

Consider Making This Short in Nylon

"I've had my Academy shorts for several years now. They're faded and the edges of the leg openings are starting to fray. Durable, but like the early polos, they're not colorfast. Patch pockets need internal dividers. Get rid of the carabiner strap on the back - it snags on stuff too much. Royal Robbins (God rest his soul) will forgive you, since none of us is going to wear 5.11s to ascend Half Dome (on the steep side). I've been waiting for 5.11 to make this short in nylon. If this happens, I'll buy several, because the basic design is good - but making it in cotton is way too retro."

Great Bike Patrol Gear

"I experimented with the 5.11 Academy shorts for bicycle patrol nd found them to be much more comfortable and practical than any other short made specifically for bike patrol. They are comfortable, durable, and allow access to pockets even while riding. Highly recommended for any bike patrol officers out there."

"I bought these shorts because of the shorter inseam. I'm a Firearms Instructor with U.S. Customs & Border Protection and they get a good workout. They're the toughest shorts I've ever had, with mag pockets for pistol or rifle mags. I recommend them highly."

"The shorts are both durable and comfortable. The pockets are the best part. The rear pockets are deep enough to put small pouches in or just keep you from sitting on your wallet. You could also use a concealment pocket holster and hide a small revolver or auto if you are in a CCW state in either the front or rear pockets. The front pockets are great for mag storage, phones, flashlights, or your money clip. If you like rappelling, the rear pocket strap is great for holding your carabiners and anchors."

Hot weather shorts!

"I call these my hot weather competition shorts! These are great for warmer weather USPSA competition as they are a bit shorter than other "tactical" shorts. The extra pockets on the front help me distribute my personal items so I don't need to go to my range bag for every little thing. I like to keep a few spare mags in the small front pockets while I use the bigger pocket for brass. The back pockets are not as deep as the regular 5.11 series but you have to give up some pocket space for comfort. The belt loops fit the CR Speed belt very well and the larger spaces between them make for a better inner to outer belt fit. Belt keepers are still a good idea though. I wish these shorts were slightly less expensive as they seem a little pricey for shorts but I think the comfort makes up for it.
Now if only they made them in the Hot Weather nylon style..."

"The Academy Shorts are one of the best products 511 has made for summer wear. I have the all colors and live in them during the warmer months. They are very comfortable to wear, hold up to a lot of washings and they look good with a tee-shirt, golf style shirt or my favorite, a Hawaiian shirt. They also blend in. They don't shout cop. I'm able to carry a firearm in the back or side pocket, spare ammo and all the other stuff you would normally carry in the various pockets. Great shorts."

Fantastic everyday version of the Tactical Shorts

"I bought a pair of the Academy Shorts because I wanted something similar to the Tactical Shorts I wear in competition, but with a shorter inseam (I don't like long shorts for everyday wear).
The Academy Shorts fit the bill superbly. All the quality and design innovation that is synonymous with 5.11 Tactical, but in a (to me) better everyday design. I don't think I can ever where shorts without slash pockets again!"
